“God requires these three things, which were bestowed in Holy Baptism, from every man: correct belief in his soul, truth on his tongue, and moderation in his body.”
Gender inclusive language would be very welcome to me, but that is not the practice of the Orthodox. Setting that issue aside since we all know women are also baptized, what pearls can be gleaned from today’s reading?
I am reminded here of the Baptismal Covenant of The Episcopal Church, found in the Book of Common Prayer:
Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and
fellowship, in the breaking of the bread, and in the
Will you persevere in resisting evil, and , whenever
you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord?
Will you proclaim by word and example the Good
News of God in Christ?
Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving
your neighbor as yourself?
Will you strive for justice and peace among all
people, and respect the dignity of every human
These words sound simple,both in the Saying and the Baptismal Covenant, but would you agree me that some of this can be quite challenging on a daily basis?
