Reflection on a Saying of a Desert Father: anonymous

“If you stand by as your brother is slandered and do not support him against those who sinfully attack him, you, too, are an attacker,” a spiritual Father of our day counseled a priest”

I am reminded of these words of Pastor Martin Niemöller:

“First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a Socialist.

“Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

“Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a Jew.

“Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”

When we see wrong being done and do not act, then we are making a choice for wrongdoing.  We cannot turn our backs.  We do not really have a choice to stay uninvolved.
