Reflection on a Saying of a Desert Christian: anonymous

“Anyone who praises a man to his face,” a certain elder said, “delivers him up for the devil to do battle against him.”

What could this Saying possibly be telling us?  Praise is a wonderful thing, encouraging and supportive and in very short supply.

Let’s remember the perspective of the Desert Christians which is that the only thing a person should ever be thinking about is God  and maybe service to others.  A person should never be thinking of themselves and praise does make a person think of one’s self.

That’s what I make of it, anyway. Have any thoughts yourself?
